AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Apple’s voice assistant Siri turns 11.
Released on the iPhone 4 in 2011, Siri changed the way people used their iPhones and iPads. The most common use of Siri is to ask the time and weather, or to send messages to contacts and ask silly questions.
In iOS 16, Siri has gained a few additional capabilities that many people will find useful. Most people just don’t know about them.
Here are some of my favorite Siri commands and skills that only power users know: Young people don’t understand this, but it was so satisfying to just hit the receiver and hang up on an annoying phone call.
It’s not the same as hitting the red button. But Siri now helps send a message when the caller gets on your nerves.
Say “Hey Siri, hang up” to Siri in iOS 16. Better yet, the person on the other end of the line will hear you speak. This is a boss move that feels really good. You need to turn this on in Settings and Accessibility. It’s easy to take a break from your phone while you’re working or sleeping. Ask Siri to “take a break”.
She asks how many minutes and turns on Do Not Disturb. When the time is up, the alarm will sound and Do Not Disturb will be turned off.
You can pre-select which phone calls you receive in Do Not Disturb mode. Have you ever left your phone in the dark? Just ask Siri “turn on the battery light” and the light will turn on so you can find it.
This is useful when you’re trying to open a door when your hands are full, and you can’t swipe through the screen to access the flashlight app.
You don’t need to open the Venmo app to send money to someone. Say “Siri, send money” and she’ll ask which app you want to use and who you want to send money to and how much.
How many times have you heard a song on the radio or TV but never got around to finding out what the Shazam app was?
Apple bought the music label app four years ago. Now when you hear a song, just ask Siri. You must turn this feature on in Control Panel. You can also ask Siri to post on Facebook and Twitter.
Ask Siri to check your email and it will tell you what happened and read the email out loud. If you want to do something silly with Siri, say, “What’s it like to be you?” Just ask her.
