Willy Chavarria has been honored with this year’s National Award for Fashion Design by Cooper Hewitt at the Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.
In the year Launched in 2000 with the White House Millennium Council, the awards are given to innovators who have demonstrated “innovation and impact” in their work. Winners in the Class of 2022 include Nader Teheran, Emily Adams Bode, Felecia Davis and more.
While the nomination process is open to the general public, final winners are selected by a panel of judges comprised of leaders in the design field. This year’s judging will be chaired by Marlon Blackwell of the National Academy of Design.
Chavarria is currently at the launch of his NFT membership project, Big Willy Love Club, which sees the designer collaborate with Bubblehouse. Commenting on the club’s Ambition Complex, Chavarria described it as a “new face” for the name.
“It’s a gateway to a more intimate experience with me as a creator and some of the special projects created with my team,” Chavarria said. “It’s a new playground for our global family to create and release projects.”
If one joins the club, they will be given seats to the brand’s upcoming runway show, scheduled for September 14, at Willy’s. As for any additional inspiration at the heart of the Private NFT Club, Chavarria indicated he would be interested in sharing some. More adult-directed content” in the future.
