WORTHINGTON — Suri Sompamitwong, a local woman who founded Creative Healing Space and ArtInvasionz, a clothing line focused on art, mental health and social justice, welcomed her clothing to Minnesota Fashion Week.
She is on a mission to find five Noble County women, ages 18 and older, who are interested in embroidering her designs at the Swedish Institute of America in Minneapolis, Sept. 18-25.
On Monday, Sompamitwong met with the director of Coalesce Collective, a production company that promotes Asian-Pacific American and Black, Indigenous and communities of color.
“They are a great manufacturing company,” Sompamitwong said. They want to bring individuals together to make a broader statement.
All models participating in Minnesota Fashion Week will walk the runway at the same time, showing designs from nine designers selected for the event.
Preparing for Minnesota Fashion Week, Sompamitwong needs five female models to showcase her Art Invasion clothing line. She is seeking Nobles County residents 18 and older and encourages anyone interested to contact her as soon as possible.
“The fashion show is more than a month away,” she said, pointing to the August 24 deadline for selecting models. “This is an amazing opportunity. There are a lot of people from Minneapolis who want to do this, but I want people from Nobles County.”
Sompamitwong requires models to be at least 18 years old because they need to travel to Minneapolis. Ride sharing will be done if possible.
To apply to be one of ArtInvasion’s models, Sompamitwong is asking for a 3-4 minute video in which the person describes their name, age, why they want to model for her clothing line, and what’s special about them. The videos should be sent to artinvasionzclothing@gmail.com.
“I’m looking for people with a go-getter attitude who want a future in the modeling industry,” Sompamitwong shared, adding that it’s important that they want to represent a clothing line that promotes social justice, the arts, and mental health.
“I really want them to promote our message,” said Sompamitwong, adding that models are paid for their work.
The models must attend a studio shoot on August 27th as well as a dress rehearsal at the American Swedish Institute on September 18th, followed by a fashion show on September 19th.
Sompamitwong created 19 pieces, 10 of which will be presented in the show. Five male models were selected for her designs from a motorcycle company based in the Twin Cities.
In addition to costumes, Sompamitwong sculpture and artwork will also be on display.
She is hopeful that Sompamitwon will be invited to LA Fashion Week after Minnesota Fashion Week.
