Hammond, Ind – The Michigan Tech volleyball team swept Cedarville on Saturday to end play at the Midwest Region crossover. The Huskies won 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 to improve to 14-7 overall and finish with an 8-2 conference mark.
“We came out well and did a good job of maintaining a solid offense and serving hard all match,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “The passing game was strong again. We’ll continue to improve passing the ball and serving hard. Our defense is making stops when we need them and big plays when we need them. Carissa is playing lights out. Defense is a big part of how we’ve been playing of late.
Tech never trailed after the first set and used a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. Cedarville held on late, but a kill by Meg Rabe tied the score and Jillian Kuizenga scored the winner with one of her first six kills.
The teams battled for six games and had five lead changes in the second. The Huskies closed the frame on a 6-1 run, spreading the offense to six different players. Tech hit .237 per second and Cedarville was held to .061.
The Huskies took a 7-1 lead in the third and extended it to nine points at 14-5. The Yellow Jackets showed some life late but committed three offensive errors for Tech’s final score. Kaycee Meiners and Meg Raabe each had four kills in the third, and Carissa Beyer recorded nine digs.
Jennings added: “Casey was good this weekend, with a strong performance from the back and a good connection with Lina. “It’s great to have her back. Megan also continued her quality play, giving us a solid six innings in all three games. Her offense continued to work at a high clip and she was having a good time.
“Janny and Grace did a great job leading the team this weekend, getting us going through tough spots and coming out with a strong game.”
Jillian Kuizenga (13), Meg Rabe (11) and Kayce Meiners (10) had double-digit kills. Lina Espejo-Ramirez had 30 assists and eight digs. Karissa Beyer recorded a match-high 17 digs.
“Overall it was a good crossover for us,” Jennings said. “We competed at a high level for many weekends and beat two good teams. We got to see first-hand how strong our region is this season, and we learned more about ourselves as a team. We’ll continue to improve. It’s great to see us moving into the second half of the conference schedule.”
Tech returns to GLIAC action next weekend with road trips to Grand Valley State and Davenport.
