Hopefully we’ll get as much drama in college football’s independent game on Labor Day as we saw Sunday night. Probably not.
In the LSU-Florida State game, it was exciting to see the LSU Tigers blow an extra point in the final seconds that could have sent the game into overtime. Clemson and Georgia Tech meet on Monday night, and it’s not expected to be close. Clemson is a 23.5-point favorite at BetMGM.
Clemson has become one of the programs we look forward to seeing in the College Football Playoff every year, but last season was a little underwhelming by Clemson’s standards. The Tigers were 10-3 in his first season behind Trevor Lawrence. Quarterback DJ Yougalley, who showed some promise when filling in for Lawrence, didn’t have the season many expected him to have. Maybe that will turn around for Uiagalelei this season.
Georgia Tech is expected to have a down season, which is why the line is what it is. The talent gap between the two teams is huge. But hopefully they put on a show in the end.
Here’s a first look at Monday’s sports betting:
Big Labor Day in MLB
Baseball gets the holiday spotlight with 13 games on Monday. That includes seven afternoon games.
The best matchup is probably the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles, two teams with playoff hopes. There was no line at BetMGM on Monday morning because Baltimore’s starting pool had not been announced.
The Minnesota Twins will face the New York Yankees in a battle of two teams that have started the season well and have faded a bit. Thanks to the Yankees’ impressive win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, the Twins are tied for first in the AL Central. The Yankees are -160 favorites.
What is the best bet?
There isn’t much else on the Labor Day schedule other than one college football game and several baseballs. Since football is going to be the focus, let’s take Clemson, even if they put up a big number. Clemson wants to make a statement to start the season and the Tigers are clearly the dominant team.
