WASHINGTON – The Senate Judiciary Committee today passed Sens. John Kennedy (R-La.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) with strong bipartisan support for the Journalism Competition and Protection Act (JCPA). JCPA supports small, local, independent and conservative news publications struggling to survive under the weight of Big Tech’s market dominance and censorship efforts.

Tech goliaths like Facebook and Google are strangling small conservative publications by making their online platforms unprofitable. Fraud is a stifling of free speech. This bill prohibits Big Tech companies from establishing and auditingSuppression or editing of online content While providing a fair playing field for local news outlets to negotiate against these censorship giants. said Kennedy.

The JCPA removes legal barriers so that small and medium-sized news organizations, including Facebook and Google, can negotiate collectively to obtain compensation from digital platforms that access their content without allowing their content to survive their journalistic work. The law prevents Big Tech from censoring these publishers and allows news outlets to seek arbitration if they have problems with their deals with digital platforms.

This bill would cover Louisiana’s major newspapers and many conservative outlets, giving them a level playing field in negotiations with Big Tech platforms that often prevent them from profiting from their work online or sharing their work with a wider audience. It does not cover large media companies such as the Washington Post or the New York Times.

News outlets supporting the JCPA include the Washington Examiner, National Review, Newsmax, Townhall Media, The Washington Times, and others.
