Dr. Watson replaces the organization’s longtime healthcare administrator, Greg Rogers.
“Lydia is a highly respected and trusted leader in the industry and here at home. She has been instrumental in leading our system through epidemiology, a staunch advocate for quality care and patient, staff and physician satisfaction, and has been successful in establishing and maintaining cultures of excellence,” said Rogers, who serves in an advisory role to Dr. Watson for December. “With her foresight and clinical background, she will play an important role in the continued growth and development of Michigan Health.”
Dave Midkiff, Michigan Board of Health member and selection committee chair, shared, “The process our team used to evaluate Dr. Watson’s qualifications was objective and thorough. We believe that our Board’s unanimous endorsement of Dr. Watson as our next President and CEO should reinforce the confidence of our employees, patients and communities that she is uniquely qualified to lead Michigan Health forward.
While serving with MyMichigan Health, Dr. Watson’s career included roles as Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer for Michigan Health, as well as Chief of Staff, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Board Member of MyMichigan Medical Center Midland. She also serves on the MHA Physicians for Healthcare Leadership Council, serving as chair in 2021-2022. In the year Prior to joining the administrative staff of Michigan in 2013, Dr. Watson cared for thousands of women as a practicing obstetrician-gynecologist at Midland Medical Center. Prior to that, she was an active employee at Saginaw General Hospital from 1988 to 1996.
Board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Watson received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Wayne State University School of Medicine. During her education, she served at the Army National Guard’s 207th EVAC Hospital for six years and was honorably discharged as a captain in 1992. Today she serves as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Biology. at Michigan State University.
Dr. She is a member of the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance/THRIVE Safety Task Force, the Midland 100 Women’s Club, and serves as the medical director for the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Investigator) program. She has also volunteered her leadership for the American Heart Association’s Good Reds for Women event and the Midland Public Schools Sexuality Advisory Council. In addition, she is the author of several textbook chapters and co-author of books. She has also received numerous awards including the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce Athena Award and most recently the 2020 YWCA Woman of the Year in Healthcare Awards. Dr. Watson is married with two grown children.
“Following the unexpected passing of Diane Poster-Slattery and her husband Don, Michigan Health has seen many changes over the past six months, but what hasn’t changed is the dedication and care we provide to patients,” said Board Chair Jane Velasquez.
