Toronto — (Business Wire— The Bay is pleased to announce that Israeli Kobla designer and founder Emefa Kuadey has been selected as a recipient of The Bay’s Fashion Fund, an initiative created to mentor and support emerging BIPOC designers in Canada. Cuday was awarded a $25,000 grant, along with a three-year mentoring program designed to help new designers overcome some of the hurdles they face when entering the competitive retail landscape.
A Ghanaian-born Englishwoman, Cuday started her career as a civil engineer. In the year In 2017, Cuday left the engineering field to pursue her passion for design and enrolled at George Brown College. In the year In 2019, she was invited to show her work at Vancouver Fashion Week. Following the success of VFW, Emefa isarella released KOBLA’s debut collection. He was freed from captivityIn the same year.
The inspiration for the Toronto-based brand came from combining the designer’s passions – fashion and engineering. Each collection is designed to pass the time, reimagining minimalism with a focus on innovative construction and quality finishes.
“As an African-born designer, it was important to me to redefine what an African-owned brand looks like and what clothing produced on the continent can be in terms of quality and style,” says Emfa. I currently manufacture israella KOBLA in Toronto, and have a goal of opening a second production facility in Ghana. My vision is that “Made in Ghana” is the fashion of the moment, the same feeling that “Made in Italy” brings to people.
“There is so much creativity and ingenuity in the fashion talent in Canada,” said Tyler French, VP and Fashion Director, The Bay. “Creating equity in the industry and nurturing this talent is incredibly important. Canadian fashion is inspired, diverse and world-class, and we need to celebrate that.”
The evaluation and selection process was conducted under the leadership of the Fashion Fund Advisory Council, which includes the country’s leading industries and social change makers.
