Panama City, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – As Covid-19 restrictions are being eased across the country, officials are bracing for a tougher flu season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flu cases are on the rise nationwide.
Therefore, health experts are urging the public to take action. They say the best line of defense is vaccination.
Joe Scully is the public information officer for the Bay County Health Department. Immunity doesn’t last forever, so go out and get your shot, he says.
“The flu strain is different from year to year and the flu vaccine you got last year won’t protect you this year,” he said.
The vaccine being given changes every year and does not always indicate the specific strain you are infected with. However, even a little protection is better than none, says Dr. Roman Nation, a family medicine physician at National Best Family Health Care.
“What people don’t realize is that in terms of infectious disease, even if you don’t target the right race, you target the cousin, which gives you a better immune system to deal with if you don’t have any preparation,” Nation said. You know you will get better results.
So get the vaccine because being prepared for this flu season can save you some pain if you do get sick.
To get the vaccine, you can contact your local health department, most doctor’s offices, or local pharmacies.
