It’s one of the most popular food challenges on social media, but there are fears it could be one of the most dangerous.
It’s called the “One-Chip Challenge” and if you’re on Tik Tok or YouTube, you probably know about it. The challenge is to eat a spicy Paqui-brand tortilla chip with some very spicy peppers and wait as long as possible to eat or drink anything else.
It is supposed to be harmless, but sometimes it is not.
“Just because something is there doesn’t make it safe,” says Dr. Travis Olives, an emergency physician and toxicologist at Hennepin Healthcare.
Last year, the hospital says it had 39 calls about the one-chip test. 34 of those calls involved children under the age of 16.
Capsaicin, a substance found in olives peppers, acts as an irritant and in some cases can cause serious and secondary problems.
“The most common symptoms are mostly GI symptoms: vomiting, stomach pain and discomfort in the throat and mouth,” he said.
States like California, Texas, and Alabama have reportedly had hospitalizations due to the chip. School districts in Georgia, California and here in the Twin Cities are warning parents about the challenge.
