Nothing Bundt Cakes, a new bakery in Okemos, cut the ribbon for a fundraising benefit on Friday, donating 20% of sales to the Gregory H. Montgomery Jr. Foundation for Ultimate Growth.

The foundation was started after former Michigan State University and NFL punter Greg Montgomery lost his battle with dementia in 2020. They strive to provide mental health resources to student-athletes at MSU.

“Greg was a friend at school … he was someone I thought about a lot,” said Wendy Kinney, owner of Okemos’ Nothing Bundt Cakes. “I continued to connect with him through his struggle with bipolar disorder because it’s something near and dear to my heart.

The foundation also developed a curriculum for coaches to discuss mental health with athletes called SCORE.

Margot Montgomery Moran, president of the Gregory H. Montgomery Jr. Foundation for Ultimate Growth and Montgomery’s sister, said, “It’s ‘strive, meet, overcome, replenish and evolve.’

The Moran family has close ties to MSU.

“Both my brothers and my dad all played football for the Michigan State Spartans,” Moran.

Montgomery has been a mental health advocate ever since he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

“He really wanted to spread (awareness) … mission aborted,” Moran said. “It’s our duty as a family to carry on, and the foundation’s motto is ‘Live the Life You Save.'”

Michigan State’s Kappa Kappa Gamma chapter supports Final Growth as part of their philanthropy and attended the event. One of their national charities is based around mental health awareness.

Kappa Kappa Gamma philanthropy chairman Bryce Gordon said, “It’s a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness…. “You heard me, you’re not alone.”
