Arizona State University has announced the appointment of Dr. Sherin Gabriel as the University’s Professor of Future Health Outcomes and Medicine and Chair of the ASU Health Outcomes Design Council.

Reporting to ASU President Michael Crowe, Gabriel is responsible for facilitating the continued development of an integrated health and health outcomes focus at ASU.

She works collaboratively with faculty and staff across the university’s comprehensive healthcare portfolio to design new, transdisciplinary approaches to teaching and collaboration to address the most complex medical education challenges and opportunities facing our society today.

Gabrielle has dedicated her career as an epidemiologist and rheumatologist to advancing innovative educational training and equitable health outcomes. She works closely with teams and academic partners to conduct research and design and implement new educational models to better prepare future health scientists and health care providers to increase health equity and improve health.

She completed her medical training at the University of Saskatchewan as the recipient of the 2022 USAsk Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award, the university’s highest honor. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and fellowships in rheumatology at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and Wellesley Hospital in Toronto. She holds a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Gabriel’s resume includes extensive leadership positions in medicine and academia, including several professorships at Mayo Medical School, the William J. and Charles H. Mayo Endowed Professorship, and serving as dean. Professor, Dean, Distinguished University Professor and CEO appointments at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Medical Group; And recently James A. Campbell, MD is Distinguished Professor and President of Rush University as well as Chief Academic Officer of Rush University Health System. Rush University is a nationally ranked academic medical center in Chicago and includes a College of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Health Sciences and Graduate College. One of the hallmarks of Gabriel’s tenure at Rush was the establishment of the Rush BMO Institute for Health Equity, which now coordinates Rush’s health equity initiatives across all of the system’s hospitals.

Among her longstanding service to professional associations and on governmental and nongovernmental boards and committees, Gabrielle is a past president of the American College of Rheumatology, the world’s leading organization dedicated to advancing research and training of rheumatologists and rheumatology health professionals to improve health outcomes for people with rheumatic diseases. She has also served on numerous national committees, most notably as a member of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases Advisory Council at the National Institutes of Health, chair and co-founder of the FDA’s Drug Safety and Risk Management Committee. Chair of the US Government Accountability Office’s Strategy Committee for the Patient-Focused Outcomes Research Institute, an institute created through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and a member of the American Association of Physicians, the leading physician-scientist community in the US.

In particular, Gabriel comes to ASU with a history of building strong working relationships across the university. During her tenure as dean at Mayo Clinic, she worked closely with the College of Health Solutions and EdPlus to develop and launch the new Mayo Medical School in Arizona, as well as to integrate the MS/Certificate and MD/MS programs in Health Care Delivery Sciences. . These innovative programs introduce Mayo medical students to the principles of health systems design and engineering, as well as health economics, leadership and management, with the goal of optimizing health care delivery and health outcomes for all.
