DEBERVILLE, Miss. (WLOX) – One person is dead after an unexpected shooting at the Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort early Wednesday morning.

Nicholas Craig, 36, had rented a room at the hotel from California while traveling to Mobile to celebrate his 36th birthday, authorities said. At 2 a.m., Craig was shot and killed by an unknown suspect as he sat in his car in a casino parking lot. According to authorities, it knocks out the suspect’s car’s mobile and rear-mounted car tag reader system.

As for Deerville Police Chief Shannon Nobles, he was saddened that Craig’s visit ended in tragedy.

“We pride ourselves on people coming to visit our community to feel safe,” Nobles said. “This gentleman couldn’t sit in his car and mind his own business without losing his life.”

Businesses like Pepe’s Bosque Mexican Grill have been located near the Scarlet Pearl for years. Owner Lillian Perez said it might be a close call for any business, but it was a much closer call for her life.

“That kind of thing doesn’t happen in Deberville,” Perez said. “Back then, he was heading home to see his family, so it was very shocking and sad. I actually had dinner that night. It hits close to home. Any time something happens on the Gulf Coast it hits close to home, but this one certainly did.

It is said that the nobles are always on the lookout for the unexpected.

“If you think things aren’t going your way, they probably aren’t,” he said. “Call us and let us know those things, we’ll be glad to see them.”

Perez Being active 24/7 is now a reality of our world.

“Talk to our children, let them know that we must always be vigilant. See where we are going, see what is around us, see who is following us. “It’s unfortunate that we have to be very careful, but it’s kind of what we have to do these days,” Perez said.

Mobile police are actively searching for the suspect in the area. The suspect’s vehicle was reported stolen, had a missing rear bumper and altered Alabama tags (2CW6059).

If you have any other information about this incident, call the Deborahville Police Department at (228) 396-4252 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-787-5898
