WINNEBAGO COUNTY – The Winnebago County Health Department offers the antiviral treatment Paxlovide to anyone who has been diagnosed with Covid.
Paxlovide is an oral medication used to treat Covid-19. It is three tablets taken twice a day for five days. Anyone age 12 and older who has tested positive for the virus can make an appointment to receive this treatment from the Winnebago County Health Department.
“It’s a commitment for people to take the medication for those five days, but it’s very effective in preventing serious illnesses and outcomes,” said Dr. Sandra Martel, public health administrator for the Winnebago County Health Department.
If you have an appointment, you will need to visit the health department to make sure that pre-existing conditions or medications do not interfere with paxlovide.
“You don’t necessarily need your health care provider to do this. And you really support protecting our health care system for people who need care for things like heart attacks and strokes and diabetes.
It is possible for people to recover and have a positive test, but doctors are less likely to show symptoms after treatment.
Dr. Stephen Bartlett with OSF St. Anthony says, “Some people are reporting that within the first two doses, they become symptom free and feel much better after taking paxlovide.
Health experts say it’s not a perfect cure, but Winnebago County is a middle-of-the-road community, which means the health system is already straining.
“If you believe I’ve tried it, and experienced positive effects on it. It really, really works,” says Dr. Bartlett.
Since it was first administered in August.. more than 20 people made an appointment and half of them took the dose.
Anyone who needs paxlovide treatment can make an appointment through the Winnebago County Health Department. website. They have locations available five days a week.
