Industry – Higher Education Institutions (IHL) Consortium to Target Jobs and Workers Disrupted by Digitalization
Singapore, October 13, 2022 /PRNewswire/ – The Jobs Transformation Map for the Information and Communications (I&C) workforce identifies new technology trends that could impact future jobs. Some I&C job roles have also been identified in areas where workers may be at risk of displacement as the workforce evolves rapidly with technological change. Josephine Theo Today at the 5G Learning Festival, IMDA announced that it will soon appoint training partners to redevelop relevant skills.
New technological trends that will affect the high demand for skilled workers in the next 3 to 5 years are 5G and IoT; Cloud Computing; Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Analytics. These trends increase the need for talent in at least three areas: (1) software engineering; (2) cloud and mobility; and (3) AI and analytics. JTM empowers employees to take control of their career growth and development by directing them to areas where they can focus their reskilling or superskilling efforts. It also serves as a reference guide for employers when redesigning jobs and changing employees into job roles or new ones. This is relevant for employers who are changing their business models and workforce to remain relevant and competitive.
Early efforts to develop the local workforce have shown promising results. Singapore 5G and Telecom Academy1. Over 7,000 local residents have taken courses in 5G and related technologies in the past 2 years, building a skilled and 5G-ready workforce base. Employers have tapped into Workforce Singapore’s job transition program to retain and reskill existing employees to take on new or redesigned job roles, such as 5G product developer and cloud system administrator.
Additional training will be carried out in moderation by training partners appointed by the IMDA TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA) programme, and Singaporeans can look forward to these opportunities next year. IHLs collaborates with industry to help employers identify at-risk workers and retrain their I&C workforce. Modular training in basic and intermediate skills in the above areas will be provided to all Singaporeans. More details will be announced in 2023.
