PETAL, Miss. (WDAM) – On December 6, the Petal Board of Aldermen voted to approve the creation of a central business district in the city of Petal. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Wednesday, January 18 to mark the establishment of the CBD.
The purpose of the district is to provide property tax abatements for new developments and existing business expansions for 3,5, or 7-year periods depending on the type of project and/or overall investment to further the growth of the city. Areas that attract new business.
“This is a really good thing,” said Petal Mayor Tony Ducker. “We struggled with the lack of a traditional downtown. As a city, we made a couple of decisions to figure out what would happen to the downtown area, but, in the end, it never stuck.
Thanks to the work of Alderman Blake Nobles and ADP Caitlin Smith, we have another useful tool that not only describes this area, but is useful for businesses looking to locate in this area.
The district is divided into the northern district and the southern district. While the northern district is divided by parcels east of Hwy 11 and along Old Richton Road, the southern district parcels run along South Main Street from West 10th Street and to the Leaf River.
This project has been running since 2021. The Petal Board of Aldermen and Forrest County Board of Supervisors passed the ordinance to bring this project to fruition, and extensive planning by the City of Petal. Forrest County Board of Supervisors, Local Development Partnership and Petal Chamber of Commerce.
Petal Alderman Ward 3 Blake Nobles said, “I am incredibly happy and thankful to my colleagues for passing this ordinance. “Many understand that the Petal business is moving to Gandhi, and no one wants to see our downtown fall by the wayside. Through this event, we provide an opportunity for current local business owners and new local businesses to start.
Along with the many downtown projects like the new bridge and the Matthews Branch sidewalk, this ordinance gives the community another tool to help create the welcoming spirit Petal residents and visitors deserve. I really hope this vision catches on and everyone can take advantage of this opportunity. As our city grows, we can expand this district to allow more owners to participate in the future.
District 3, Forrest County Board of Supervisors “Forrest County is incredibly excited about our growing partnership with the City of Petals. “We want to do everything we can to help Petal City grow and prosper, and this central business district will do just that. This project will open the door for Petal to be a profitable location for new investments and help us continue this good relationship with Petal City. We can’t wait to see what comes of it.”
Petal has been a city of steady growth and opportunity for many years, but this central business district boost is an opportunity to spur even more growth in this historic part of the city.
“The Petal Area Chamber of Commerce is excited about the creation of a designated Central Business District in Petal because it will attract new businesses and established businesses to downtown,” said Valerie Wilson, executive director of the Petal Chamber of Commerce. “The high rents and property values ​​on Evelyn Gandhi Parkway prevent many small businesses from being viable due to high costs. These same businesses can be very successful in our CBD.”
We provide incentives for businesses and individuals to invest in downtown properties, finding and beautifying the downtown. Our goal is to create a downtown experience where people can enjoy shopping, visiting and living in the CBD.
Officials hope to have the application processed by the end of January.
