Christ’s next bid may be the answer to today’s hunger for beauty.
On February 15, the luxury auctioneer will open the “Andre Leon Talley Collection” auction in New York. The 68-lot sale will feature a selection of the late fashion editor’s personal items, from haute-couture clothing to handbags, jewelry, fine art, books and home decor. Comprised of coveted pieces from Hermès, Versace, Louis Vuitton and Bottega Veneta, the collection is as glamorous and high-flying as the man who put it together. The list reflects Talley’s decades-long relationship with fashion icons Karl Lagerfeld, Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Rucci, Tom Ford, Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour.

In a career spanning more than 40 years in the fashion industry, the charismatic editor has found more than one rare fashion find that can sell for more than asking price. The most expensive item up for auction at Christie’s is an Andy Warhol painting. Candy box (1928-1987), is estimated to sell for $150,000 to $200,000. Limited-edition Louis Vuitton handbags and trunks with the monogram “ALT” were featured alongside Versace silk slips, Ralph Rucci caftans and amethyst-studded Chanel jewels. Engraved portrait of Talley of Alice Springs, titled VG Villa (1989), rounds out the offerings and can sell for up to $3,000.
Tally is known internationally for its level of excellence in the fashion industry. Before his death in January 2022, the larger-than-life journalist was raised by his grandfather in Durham, North Carolina during the Jim Crow era. In the year He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in French literature and soon after began graduate studies at Brown University in Rhode Island. In 1983, Talley began working in America Vogue And in 1988, he was named creative director of the publication. Talley holds the latter title as the first black man to become a fashion industry legend and icon.
“Andre Leon Talley’s sense of fashion was singular and timeless,” Christie’s head of personal and iconic Elizabeth Segal said in a statement. “He was very talented, and the collection he amassed throughout his life was unlike any other. We are delighted to welcome this group of objects from his home that showcase Tally’s endless love for all things beautiful.

Andre was a scholar and lifelong commitment to social justice and a pioneering visionary for black creators and veterans. Andre sees his collection of beautiful items steeped in fashion history as his legacy, and is honored to ensure that the sale benefits the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and Mount Sinai Church in Durham.
Christie’s works closely with the editor’s estate to ensure that both churches not only receive the proceeds from the sale, but also to create opportunities for the underprivileged to honor his legacy. The André Leon Talley Collection will take bids at a live sale at Christie’s New York on February 15 and two online sales on February 16 and 17.
