ATLANTA – The Georgia Ports Authority handled a record 5.9 million twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) last calendar year, a 5% increase from 2021.

The Port of Savannah achieved four out of five months for container volume on the year, peaking at 575,500 TEUs in August.

“This year has been challenging, but a collaborative effort across Georgia’s supply chain has ensured that cargo movement remains fluid,” said Griff Lynch, the authority’s executive director. “I want to thank our board for approving the new infrastructure that will allow us to handle more cargo.”

Capacity at the Port of Savannah is expected to increase to 7.5 million TEU this year and 9 million by 2025 due to the renovation of Garden City Terminal Berth 1, the 90-acre Garden City Terminal West expansion and the planned ocean transition. Terminal to all containers utility.

“We are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead,” said Joel Wootton, the authority’s board chairman, on Tuesday. “We’re bringing faster shipping, faster turnaround times for trucks and more room for business growth.”

In addition to last year’s record container-cargo traffic, the Port Authority expects 443,000 tons to be handled in 2021, a 16 percent increase to 3.3 million tons.

The Colonel Island Terminal in Brunswick handled 651,101 cars and heavy machinery, while the Ocean Terminal in Savannah moved another 19,630 Roll-On/Roll-Off units for a total of 670,731, an increase of 0.4%.

Total tonnage passing through all port authority docks reached 42.4 million tons last year, an increase of 2%.
