LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – Health officials have seen an increase in overdose deaths and emergency room visits in Nevada, and are reminding the public of free resources to help prevent accidents.
According to the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, opioid-related emergency room visits increased 66 percent from July to August. Stimulant-related overdoses increased 50% over the same time period.
The uprising prompted the creation of a new government task force to find the cause.
An advisory was issued by the Southern Nevada Health District after six consecutive overdoses within 36 hours. Four were linked to fentanyl.
In the year In 2021, the SNHD recorded 225 fentanyl-related deaths. According to senior epidemiologist Brandon Deliz, the number of deaths in 2022 could surpass last year’s. He warns that any drug can be laced with the deadly substance.
Metro is finding pills laced with fentanyl and its analogs. So these fentanyl analogs can be mixed with heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, or packed into fake pills like benzodiazepines that go with Xanax and Klonopin. “Many people unknowingly use drugs laced with fentanyl,” Deliz said.
“There is no drug involved. So if individuals think they are taking something, there is a chance that fentanyl could be mixed with that substance without the user’s knowledge,” he said.
“People who are addicted to drugs are always looking for a high, so drug dealers and manufacturers lace other drugs with fentanyl,” says Debbie Levitt with Vegas Stronger, which helps people struggling with addiction and the homeless find appropriate resources. Services range from detox centers to mental health support and rooms. They arrive.
