Boston Street returns to the 1920s this weekend for a fashion fundraiser to fight cancer

Boston Avenue is returning to the 1920s this weekend as Crooked Gypsy and collaborators Michael and William Harris present their second annual fashion show to help fight cancer.
“It’s our way of giving back to the community and trying to fight this terrible disease,” said Evie Knight, owner of Twisted Gypsy. “My wife and I and a couple of other people decided two years ago that we wanted to do something different and do something that would be useful to the community, and that’s when we came up with the idea of ’fashion, fight and find a cure.’
While last year’s red carpet-style show was held at Twisted Gypsy, Saturday’s event is from 5-8pm at the Golden Cup, 1336 Boston Ave.
The move is strategic as Knight has always been on a mission to help other local businesses.
“Our idea on this is that it helps to see all the businesses here in the Netherlands when they hold it in different places,” Knight said. “By doing this, we’re hoping that people who haven’t been to the Golden Cup will now come in and say, ‘Hey, there’s a great coffee shop in Boston.'”
This year, she said, others stepped up to help. Those on Boston Avenue and beyond contributed to the fundraiser. United Built Homes, Echo Maintenance and Sunset Travel are sponsoring the event. Boston Avenue store Ortiz Menswear and Bridal will once again offer apparel to complement the themed fashion show. The grounds at Groves are serving food. And local musician Hunter Courts will host the event and provide music.
“There is a saying that I like to say. ‘What do you do when you reach the top? You put your hand down to bring the others to be with you,’” Knight said. “That’s it, my wife and I, our goal – we want everyone to succeed. This is about growing Nederland, teamwork and embracing everyone.
“Because we work so hard, we small business owners. We had covid and there is always something that makes it difficult for small business owners. Everything is happening online, so the more we can help each other succeed, that’s just a bonus.
Tickets for Fashion, Fight and Cure are $40 and can be purchased on site with cash or card. In addition to the fashion show, there will be mystery bag games and a silent auction. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their best 20s attire, which may win a prize.
All proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
“Every year we hope to contribute more and more and hopefully find a cure,” Knight said.
