Business owners of the Allen Company hope to add the wet/dry issue to the May ballot

Bowling Green, Ky. (WBKO) – Petitions are circulating across the county to add a wet/dry challenge to Allen County’s primary election. They are available at various local businesses and online.

The last time the issue was put to the vote In 2017, voters voted to remove alcohol from the county. Since then, local business owners have seen Allen Co. residents go elsewhere to buy alcohol, taking their potential business with them.

“A lot of people only see the alcohol part and you don’t have to drink it just because it’s there. But you’ll see the benefit from it in the county,” said Tammy Shockley, the business owner who started the petition. “If you go outside the county line, you’re in a wet county. And that county will benefit from whatever money they spend there. You’re getting your money’s worth, and that’s a wet county, so why not put it in Allen County? We see this place growing.”

“Businesses in Scottsville, they’re collecting signatures for me and I run over once a week and pick those up and make sure everything’s okay. We want everybody accounted for, that’s signed,” Shockley said.

Business owners and residents are hoping to see the benefits of the wetlands status, and some believe the transition is overdue.

“I love Allen County, don’t get me wrong,” Shockley said. I want to see it grow and flourish and keep people in the county instead of going out of the county to spend their money.

The Allen County Clerk’s Office says signatures must be submitted by Jan. 31. To be considered legal, they must be completely filled out by a registered voter.
