Murray State Hall of Famer, Patrick Newcomb, won the 103rd playing of the Kentucky Open when he carded a final round 4-under-par 68 at Persimmon Ridge GC in Louisville.
The victory is Newcomb’s seventh as a professional and it puts him in a rare class of 14 golfers who have won the Kentucky Open and the Kentucky State Amateur Championship. When he was a student-athlete with the Racers, Newcomb scored victories at the State Am in 2011 and 2012.
Newcomb’s score line included rounds of 67-71-68=206 as he won the event by five shots over Kyle Wilshire at 211.
“This feels really cool,” said Newcomb to KyGolf.org. “I like this event, I like Persimmon Ridge, and the tournament being here consecutive years is part of the reason why I’m able to keep playing in the Open. I’m playing almost every week on the Korn Ferry Tour, but my familiarity with the golf course gives me the chance to feel prepared entering this tournament.”
There were other former Murray State players in the pro division including Gabe Wheeler who placed eighth on scores of 70-74-71=215 and Mitchell Moore who had scores of 71-73-74=218 had a spot in 13th place. Connor Coombswho just finished up at MSU last spring, was the only former Racer to make the cut in the amateur division as he finished third on scores of 72-68-72=212.
Patrick Newcomb joined his brother, Nick, to make the first brother combination to be inducted into the Murray State Hall of Fame in 2020.
Persimmon Ridge will host the Kentucky Open for the third consecutive year in 2023 (July 25-27).
2022 Hall of Fame Dinner & Program
The annual Hall of Fame dinner is on the night of Nov. 11 at the CFSB Center. The 2022 class will also be recognized Nov. 12 at the Racer football game against Robert Morris (1 pm kick off) and a men’s basketball game against a yet to be determined opponent. Hall of Fame dinner tickets may be purchased through the MSU ticket office online at GoRacers.com.
Racer Football Mini-Ticket Plan
Racer football three-game mini-plan packages are now available for purchase. The package includes a general admission ticket for the home opener vs. Jacksonville State (Sept. 10), vs. Eastern Illinois (Sept. 24) and vs. Robert Morris (Nov. 12). The home opener will be a night to remember as we “Light up the Stew” and giveaway 3,000 LED blue and gold glow boom sticks presented by CFSB. The Racers return home two weeks later for the always popular “Family Weekend”, and finish out the season at home with Hall of Fame and Military Day. Each purchase of a 3-game mini-plan will also include one general admission ticket to a Racers home basketball game at CFSB Center during the 2022-23 season.
