MORGANTON, W.Va. (WDTV) – There is some confusion about a viral disease. According to health officials, monkeypox is a virus that lasts about 4 weeks.

Lee Smith, of the Mon County Health Department, said as of last week, the number of cases of monkeypox diagnosed in West Virginia remained at 8.

Two of these are in Monongalia County, but have not kept up.

“There are not many cases diagnosed with the disease, so we say the disease is rampant. This approach takes weeks to run, so we don’t want to wave the flag and shout victory, and we can’t guarantee that.

Because West Virginia is not a high-risk area for the virus, local health departments have limited access to vaccines, Smith said.

They said they are trying to get the vaccine they have for people who are vulnerable to the disease.

“The government decides who gets what, and it depends on what active issues you have. A couple of cases outside of the United States don’t put you at the top of this list, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have people at risk.

He said it can take up to a week after contact and exposure before people start showing symptoms of the virus.

Smith says there are signs to watch for if you think you might have the disease.

“You don’t feel good, you feel a little rough, maybe a headache, maybe a fever, muscle aches, things like that.”

Once you catch the virus, once the disease has started, you have lifelong immunity, he said. If you need more information about the vaccine, contact your local health department.
