Off-white on the runway in spring 2023

We saw many fashion trends from Paris Fashion Week this season to name a few; From Capuchin to Low Level. It was the main thing we had seen before, but that made it less interesting: the effect of trompe l’oeil.
Translated from French as “to trick the eye”, the trippy fashion technique is defined as something that is actually presented in 3D but turns out to be an optical illusion – hence tricking the eye. Trompe l’oeil was born in the late 1920s on the runways of none other than Elsa Schiaparelli.
For spring 2023, Paris was the starting point for this trend’s resurgence. The latest off-white collection is punctuated by faded skeleton-like trompe l’oeil motifs, which can be seen on denim dresses and draped over t-shirts, for example. The visual illusion made its way into the Loewe Spring 2023 collection, as designer Jonathan Anderson wowed audiences with Minecraft-like designs, including pixelated hats and khakis.

Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing showed Renaissance-inspired clothes that looked as if the models themselves had been painted naked; And on the last day of Paris Fashion Week, Louis Vuitton presented a few outfits that included larger-than-life belt buckles with mini skirts and tailored looks (not real, FYI). And of course, Schiaparelli’s Daniel Roseberry brought in influences from the Surrealism-loving house’s early collections, manifesting in catsuits and gowns with anatomical patterns dusted with gold glitter.
