The Samsung Climate Week show featured a familiar face to Owensboro residents on Saturday, as local Kelsey Race modeled one of her handmade dresses from her business, RaceCycled.
Reese was invited to the Samsung Show to promote the company’s sustainability efforts. She, along with eight other designers, was tasked with making things out of paper, metal or electronic waste.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever seen and that’s not an exaggeration. I couldn’t believe how well we were treated and that I was in New York City for my first fashion show,” said Reese.
While the materials are out of the ordinary, the idea of being creative with her designs is what she does for many of her pieces now.
Shining a spotlight on small businesses in the sustainable fashion community, Reese felt grateful to be included in the conversation and showcase her own work.
She said the divide between the tech and creative industries can often come off as a bit competitive. However, being there showed that the two can coexist in both media to show something.
“I felt very honored. “It was really exciting for me because Samsung is this tech giant,” she said.
Her dress and small bag containing her phone – all made from paper – took her at least 20 hours to complete.
Although she never imagined that she would be modeling for Samsung in her first fashion show, being there made her wish come true when she was younger. She became interested in opening her own fashion business after years of filling in notebooks, drawing sketches and observing many things. Project runway with her mother.
“When I’m excited about his success with Recycle, I think 25-year-old Kelsey is excited, but mostly 9-year-old Kelsey is excited because the first thing I wanted to be was fashion. designer,” she said.
As she grew older, the idea of becoming a designer was pushed to the back of her mind – but she never got rid of it. She said her family always shopped and bought clothes for the house.
That continued through college and into adulthood, and eventually she started selling her clothes by hand — though that didn’t change. After taking a theater costume class, she began altering clothes, taking things that had been destroyed and breathing new life into them.
Sustainability was not at the forefront; It was simply her childhood habit.
But eventually, she learned the impact that buying secondhand can have on the world and hopes to help encourage people to do the same.
“There are a lot of reasons to think about buying second-hand, and if I can play just a small part in encouraging someone to buy something else, whether it’s from me or directly from a thrift store or a thrift store. Friend, then I feel a little better,” Reese said.
Now she takes recycled clothes or other fabrics and flips them. In addition to clothing, she also made clothes from curtains, tables, desks, side tables, dressers, and many other “blank canvases.”
In late October, she plans to stock her website with more quilts and quilted pieces for the colder months. She plans to include coats and pants in that release.
Thank you for all the support from people far and wide. Whether she’s rocking a sweater she made in her hometown of Owensboro, or someone across the country sharing a jorset — a corset made from a jean top — proudly posting it to their followers.
“It’s important to me that everyone I send products to is satisfied and happy with what they receive,” she says.
