GREENSBORO, NC (theACC.com) – Redshirt seniors Pete Heldon Heller and Virginia Tech’s Mikey Lewis were recognized as the ACC Co-Wrestlers of the Week after each posted important victories over their opponents in dual action last weekend.
In a wild doubleheader that featured a little bit of everything, Heller helped ensure the No. 20 Panthers came away with a team victory in Columbia on Sunday. Heller’s 4-2 decision at No. 12 over Joshua Ogunsanya at 165 pounds stopped the Lions’ momentum and Pitt came back from a nine-point deficit to earn a 19-18 dual victory. The Hofstra transfer and former EIWA champion, ranked No. 17 in the weight class, secured his second takedown and outboxed Ogunsanya for the rest of the frame, showing an upset when the Panthers needed it most.
Virginia Tech’s third-ranked Lewis scored a 3-2 decision over No. 11 Peyton Mocon at 174 pounds in a decisive 17-15 win over No. 7 Missouri as the No. 9 Hokies opened their home bracket. Lewis collected the takedown early — and nearly added another before the wave — then added a ride time and an escape to pick up the one-point win. It was one of the many exciting moments in the high-profile clash that featured eight head-to-head matches between the top contenders.
The Hokies travel to Palo Alto, California this Sunday to close out the first half of the tournament.
Pitt will return to double action in 2023 for an exciting start, hosting the Backyard Brawl against rival West Virginia on Sunday, January 8th at 2pm at Fitzgerald Field House.
