Through the Rustic Pathways Climate Leaders Fellowship, Amita Akshintala created a project that focused on the problems associated with cheap and fast fashion in Plainsboro. She is tackling a wide range of issues, including labor practices.
Offered for free by the Rustic Pathways Foundation and Stanford University’s Deliberative Democracy Lab, the fellowship asks students like Akshintala to design a project tailored to their community’s needs and then connect with other participants online to share ideas.
“I wanted to do something that would affect the youth in my area – so people my age and people in my class,” Akshintala said.
“When I chose to create a website about fast fashion, I thought about how many people in my generation and other generations buy fast fashion brands and how harmful this can be, not only to the environment, but also to the economy and human rights.”
She also gave a school presentation and in fast fashion created a website that was messed around in the environmental circle to spread the word about the problems.
Akshintala admits that teenagers are a tough sell because fast fashion is cheap and often allows young people to follow certain fashion trends.
However, she plans to continue her efforts in the fall, including writing about it for the school newspaper.
She also hopes to spread the message beyond her local communities.
The next round of fellowship program will be held from October 10 to December 9 for another group of high school students.
