Virginia Tech and North Carolina will meet for the 45th time on Saturday afternoon, revisiting a rivalry that dates back to 1895. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and will be broadcast. On the ACC network.

Sept. 3, 2021 – Virginia Tech 17, North Carolina 10 (Blacksburg, Va.)
In their most recent matchup, Tech downed UNC 17-10. After the 2020 season without fans, the 2021 season opener was filled with anticipation, and it did not disappoint. The Tar Heels came into the season as the No. 10 program in the nation, led by Heisman hopeful Sam Howell, but that didn’t scare Tech’s defense. The Hokies were flying around the field, combining for nine tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles and three interceptions. The game came down to the final minutes, with only three minutes remaining when the Tar Heels had the ball. UNC was driving down the field, until an interception by the defensive back Chamari Connor He tied the game for Tech with 45 seconds left.

Oct. 19, 2019 – Virginia Tech 43, North Carolina 41 (6 OT) (Blacksburg, Va.)
In the 2019 matchup between the two programs, the sold-out crowd enjoyed a back-and-forth battle that lasted six overtimes. The game saw six lead changes, four goal difference and a total of four hours and six minutes. Due to injuries and situational matchups, the Hokies were forced into their quarterback class as Hendon Hooker, Quincy Patterson II and Ryan Willis all played and threw touchdowns. The offense’s biggest output of the night was 254 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Down 31-24 with just over five minutes left, the Hokies needed a point and Patterson delivered. Substituting for the injured Hooker, the redshirt freshman burst through the line for a 53-yard touchdown that sent the game into overtime. If the regulation wasn’t crazy enough, overtime took it to another level, with three missed field goals, a blocked field goal and four failed two-point field goals. The game was finally decided in the sixth overtime period, when Patterson rushed in for a two-point conversion that gave the Hokies a 43-41 victory.

October 13, 2018 – Virginia Tech 22, North Carolina 19 (Chapel Hill, NC)
A year ago, the two programs faced off in Chapel Hill, which turned out to be another nail-biter. Quarterback Ryan Willis showed off his dual-threat abilities by throwing for 221 yards and two touchdowns through the air and 88 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Down 19-14, Tech got the ball with just over five minutes left in the game and drove 98 yards down the field in 18 plays. The drive ended with a one-yard touchdown by tight end Dalton Kee and went on to improve the Hokies’ record to 4-2 on the season.

October 8, 2016 – Virginia Tech 34, North Carolina 3 (Chapel Hill, NC)
The 2016 match was billed as the “Hurricane Game”, as heavy rain and wind battled Hurricane Matthew. The two teams combined for just 133 yards through the air and six turnovers. The running game was key for Tech’s offense, as the Hokies rushed for 189 yards and quarterback Travon McMillian and quarterback Jerrod Evans each ran for a touchdown. The lunch pail defense shut down the Tar Heels offense, with 10 tackles for loss, two sacks and four sacks.

September 20, 2008 – Virginia Tech 20, North Carolina 17 (Chapel Hill, NC)
Coming off the ACC Championship a year ago, expectations were sky high for Frank Beamer’s Hokies. Tech entered the game 2-1 on the season and had a crucial division win, but needed a win to have a chance to defend its title. In the year The Hokies are 4-0 against UNC since joining the ACC in 2004, but that hasn’t stopped the Tar Heels from putting up a fight. Midway through the third quarter, UNC had a 17-3 lead after a 50-yard run by running back Greg Little. But Tech, led by quarterback Tyrod Taylor, finished with 17 unanswered points, capped by a 45-yard field goal from Dustin Keyes. The win moved the Hokies to 3-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Beach Division. The comeback win helped propel Tech to an ACC championship and eventually another ACC title.

November 6, 2004 – Virginia Tech 27, North Carolina 24 (Chapel Hill, NC)
This upset was the first time the two programs played as an ACC team due to the long drought from 1947-2004, in addition to the Gator Bowl in 1997. Heading into Chapel Hill, the Hokies are 7-2 (4-1 ACC) on the season and No. 18 in the nation, and need another division win to stay in contention for the ACC Championship. Running back Mike Imoh was the X-factor in this game, holding UNC’s defense to 243 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The win helped keep Tech atop the ACC and a shot at the regular season crown.
