LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAV) – Louisville’s Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods (OSHN) is encouraging men of color to step up and take care of their mental health this October.

A city-wide ad campaign features different personalities expressing different emotions.

Among the words mentioned were hopelessness, anxiety and depression.

In those ads, a phone number is listed that connects the caller to a free, trained mental health professional.

At OSHN, the Trauma Resilient Communities program focuses on people who are vulnerable to trauma every day, such as environmental violence, poverty and racial injustice.

They also focus on ending mental health stigma against men of color.

The program seeks to lower barriers to available resources and remove overly masculine ideals that keep them out of clinical care.

“People are so mad, so angry, so angry, and they’re on the streets and they don’t know where to go,” said program manager Nanette Dix.

Clinical therapist Jonathon White is trying to normalize mental health for black men.

“Men can handle stress,” White said. “Men have feelings.”

White, black man himself, representation is important.

“People come into my office and say, ‘I didn’t know you were black,’ or ‘It’s great to have someone who can identify with it,'” White explained.

The phone number listed on the bulletin boards in the OSHN campaign is (502) 901-0100.

There are also a handful of other resources.

UofL Health has a 24-hour hotline at (502) 451-3333 or (800) 451-3637 and a walk-in service at UofL Health Peace Hospital.
