It’s a conversation we should have after another great performance.
The Jaguars (2-1) defeated a limited Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers (1-2) in a 38-10 victory Sunday at Sophie Stadium in Los Angeles. It marked Jacksonville’s second straight win since September 2019, the first since back-to-back wins since September 2019.
“These guys are playing with confidence,” coach Doug Pederson said. “Winning can do that.”
Here are some takeaways from the Jaguars’ performance in Week 3:
A fourth-down conversion started the offensive explosion
The Jaguars led 16-7 at halftime. They were 1 for 4 in the red zone to start the game. The meat was left on the bone earlier.
It started to change in the third quarter. Facing fourth-and-1 at Jacksonville’s 50, third-year running back James Robinson ripped off a 50-yard touchdown run. It started a 22-point scoring streak for the Jaguars.
“Oh, it was great,” quarterback Trevor Lawrence said of Robinson’s run. “Especially at that point in the game, when you’re in control of the clock, you’re in the lead. … Being able to hit the ball.” I think that’s in fourth place. That was a big game.
Another strong performance from Trevor Lawrence
After his best game as a pro in last week’s shutout of the Indianapolis Colts, Lawrence continued his productive play. The second-year quarterback completed 72% of his passes (28 of 39) for 262 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and a 115.5 passer rating, the second-highest of his career.
He picked the Chargers’ defense early No. 1 overall in the passing game. He averaged a career-low 2.39 seconds to throw and completed all passes under 2.5 seconds, going 19-for-23 for 162 yards and a touchdown, according to Next Gen Stats.
Lawrence expanded his wealth. Five Jaguars pass-catchers had at least three receptions and three had touchdowns.
Pederson was quick to point out the pass protection that shined on Lawrence’s big day.
“I think our offensive line really took over this football game,” Pederson said.
A jump on Herbert, hurting the Chargers’ offense
Herbert, the Chargers quarterback, played with a broken rib cage, but the Jaguars still had to use the weakened opposing offense.
They did.
Jacksonville created back-to-back turnovers in the second quarter. On first down, rookie linebacker Devin Lloyd picked off Herbert as running back Sony Michel attempted a pass in Chargers territory. He then sacked Herbert when he stripped defensive lineman Dwayne Smoot. The transition resulted in 10 points.
While the Chargers had 312 yards of offense, the Jaguars held them to just one touchdown, 1-for-3 in the red zone and 5-for-13 on third down.
