Some payments by the region’s largest insurer have been due to Valley Health for years
Valley Health System today filed a lawsuit in Winchester County Circuit Court against Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, formerly known as Elevens Health. The lawsuit includes two counts: breach of contract and violation of Virginia’s Conduct and Fairness Carrier Business Practices Act.
For two years, Valley Health says, it has worked in good faith to quietly resolve significant reimbursement issues, citing delays in payment for health care services provided to its members.
“Anthem has given us no other option than to take legal action and recover the $11.4 million in contractual payments to our health system,” said Valley Health President and CEO Mark. Nantz
Anthem reported record profits as Valley Health grapples with decades of high inflation, financial challenges related to the pandemic and continued losses from treating Medicare, Medicaid and self-pay patients.
“We will continue to do our part to serve our community and ensure that patients have access to our health system’s providers and services. But Anthem, one of the nation’s largest health insurers and responsible for a large portion of Valley Health’s revenue — is aware of the detrimental effects of payment delays and, ultimately, our ability to maintain quality community health care.” “We need to make an impact,” Nantz said. “You and I will not allow our health system to withhold payments that limit our ability to deliver the care our patients and their members pay for, expect and deserve.”
Valley Health patients covered by Anthem health plans will not be affected and can continue to visit Valley Health hospitals, facilities and care providers as usual.
