HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Hundreds of Hattiesburg residents and health professionals gathered Saturday for a community health event to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.

The first, the “Hispanic Festival,” featured music, food and free health screenings in Hub City’s East Side Park.

Organizers said the goal was to reach out to the Hispanic community to make sure they take advantage of the health care options available to them.

“Basically, it’s not just for the Hispanic community, it’s for everyone, know their health, know their numbers, and this was the perfect time to put on this event,” said Shanelle Williamson, MS community health worker. The Shinn Project and the Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative.

“As Hispanics, we are not examined every year or month or anything, so that is a need and we have to do it, so it is to inform them, hi, we are here, you all have benefits, they are all important to us. Also,” said the community health worker and interpreter of SEMRHI Edith Fuentes said.

The event was hosted by the Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative and the MS Shin Project.
