When it became aware that Pixel had the potential to transmit unwanted data to Meta, Novant Health disabled the Pixel as a precaution and began an investigation to determine how much data was being transmitted. Based on that investigation, Novant Health decided June 17, 2022Sensitive information or PHI could have been disclosed to Meta based on user activity within the Novant Health website and MyChart portal. This information may include the affected patient: such as email address, phone number, computer IP address and contact information entered into Emergency Contacts or Advanced Care Plan; and information such as appointment type and date, physician selected, button/menu selections, and/or content typed into free text boxes. The information does not include social security numbers or other financial information unless entered into the user’s free text box. The letter sent to each patient states that such financial information may be involved.
Based on its investigation, Novant Health is not aware of any improper use or attempt of any patient information by Meta or any other third party. According to Facebook’s terms and conditions, they have policies and filters that block sensitive personal information and do not include that information in their ad manager. However, to be safe and transparent, Novant Health is sending letters to affected patients, including some patients of independent doctors and facilities that use the Novant Health MyChart medical record. Novant Health has implemented additional structure, governance and policies around the use of pixels and is taking steps to ensure this does not happen again.
