Franklin Park Zoo staff announced this week that Annala, a 17-year-old female tiger, is experiencing serious age-related health problems.
Lately, Anala has become lethargic and has had days where she doesn’t feel like going into her outdoor enclosure, zoo officials said. On September 21, she was examined under anesthesia so that the zoo’s veterinary team could get a complete picture of her health.
After an exam last May, her kidney values worsened significantly and blood work and a kidney biopsy confirmed she had kidney problems, according to Animal Husbandry. Annala is an elderly cat, and kidney problems are not uncommon in a cat of her age.
“Until recently, Anala was in good health. We are sorry to share the news of her current health issues. “We’re keeping a close eye on her, making sure she’s comfortable and doing everything she can,” said New England Zoo veterinarian Dr. Chris Bonar.
While Annala is undergoing palliative care, her kidney condition is chronic and irreversible. Because of her ongoing health issues, the zoo said there may be days when she chooses not to go to her outdoor enclosure.
“Annala is a wonderful ambassador for her species, and while we know it’s sad that guests don’t see her outdoors every day, we appreciate everyone’s care and understanding. Franklin Park Zoo. “Annala is a favorite of guests and staff alike, and her dedicated care team is very attentive to her, which It ensures she can be comfortable and enjoy the foods she loves.”
Zoo officials said Annala still chooses to participate in the training program with her care team. Training allows staff to closely monitor her health through positive reinforcement and operant conditioning.
In the year When the Tiger Tales home opened in 2006, it marked the first time tigers had been seen at the Franklin Park Zoo in 30 years. Annala, a Bengal mix, and Luther, a white tiger who died of cancer in 2019, were taken in as young cubs by US Fish and Wildlife Service special agents when they were to be sold at a wildlife sanctuary.
