Governor Abbott talks about business at the East Texas Roundtable

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – Texas Governor Greg Abbott visited East Texas Wednesday afternoon with more than a month to go for a roundtable discussion with local business leaders. Abbott hosted the interview at Texas Preferred Site Fleet Services on SH 31 East just outside of Tyler.

“I’ve been making the rounds to talk to business tables like this across the state of Texas, hearing firsthand from local business leaders about the challenges they’re facing, supply chain challenges or having an under-educated workforce to go. Get them working fast,” Abbott said in a brief press conference after the roundtable.

Among Abbott’s takeaways from the speech: the importance of preparing Texas students for success in the real world.

“To ensure that when students graduate, whether from high school or college, they have real-life skills that they can use and apply. As opposed to being unable to find a job and leaving thousands of dollars in debt.

With the general election less than a month away, we asked Abbott whether the visit was a campaign stop or official business as governor.

“That’s all,” he said. “First of all, I am a 24/7 ruler. But also, I’m running for re-election. So, let me point to what we’ve done for Texas in the past four years, making Texas number one for business, adding more jobs than any other state in the country, and reminding people of its prosperity. Abbott’s visit to Tyler was open only to those invited to the roundtable, members of the media and those working in the hospitality industry. Lawmakers such as state Rep. Cole Hefner (R-Mount Pleasant) and state Rep. Matt Shaffer (R-Tyler) were also in attendance.
